1976 RAIN (Parfitt) (4.33) You Lost The Love (Rossi/Young) (2.58) Producer: Status Quo 7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO 6059 133 Released: 6 February 1976 The track 'Rain' was originally intended to be included on the album 'On The Level', but at the time of the recording sessions Rick Parfitt had not completed the song and so it was held over to the band's next release. This single was issued to promote the release of the forthcoming Quo album entitled 'Blue For You' - which included this recording. The single bacame another chart success for the band, peaking in the top ten at number seven. The flipside track, the previously unreleased 'You Lost The Love' (originally entitled 'Peace Of Mind'), did not feature on any Quo album release until the compilation entitled 'The Other Side Of Status Quo' in 1995. Drifting Away (Parfitt/Lancaster) (5.05) Producer: Status Quo 7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO 6059 146 Released: 2 July 1976 This edited version of 'Mystery Song' was the second single to be issued from the number one selling Quo album 'Blue For You'. For the release of this single the track was editied down from the original 6:44 minute recording included on the album. Despite the hugely successful sales of the album 'Mystery Song' spent nine weeks in the UK singles chart, peaking at number eleven. The flipside track 'Drifting Away' was the original recording previously included on the 'Quo' album in 1974. All Through The Night (Lancaster/Rossi) (3.14) Producer: A-side - Roger Glover / B-side - Status Quo 7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO 6059 153 Released: 3 December 1976 This was the third Quo single to be released during 1976 and for the first time since leaving Pye Records, the band invited a guest producer to work with them in the studio for the recording of a new single. The track 'Wild Side Of Life' was originally a country song, recorded in 1952 by Hank Snow, which went on to be covered by many other artists over the years. The particular recording which prompted Francis Rossi to suggest that Quo should cover the track was the 1964 hit by Tommy Quickly And The Remo Four. With Roger Glover (bass player from Deep Purple) handling production duties, Quo recorded their version of 'Wild Side Of Life' specifically for release as their next single - which went on to become another top ten chart hit. This recording however, was not released on any Quo album until the 1980 Vertigo compilation entitled 'Twelve Gold Bars'. The track 'All Through The Night' was a previously unreleased track which remained unavailable on album until 1983, when it was included on Pickwick Records compilation 'To Be Or Not To Be'. In My Chair (Rossi/Young) (3.14) - Gerdundula (Manston/James) (3.19) Producer: John Schroeder 12 inch vinyl maxi single - PYE BD 103 Released: 13 May 1977 This maxi single was issued as one of a series of similar twelve inch vinyl releases called 'Pye Big Deal', each featuring four well known tracks by other Pye recording artists from the past. All of the tracks on this release were the original previously issued recordings, with the version of 'Gerdundula' being the first of Quo's two recordings of the song - as originally included as the flipside to the single 'In My Chair'. Following the demise of Pye Records in 1980, this maxi single was later re-issued by PRT (Precision Records & Tapes - the company that secured the Pye back catalogue material), on their own PRT label - using the same BD 103 catalogue number. Ring Of Change (Rossi/Young) (4.21) Producer: Pip Williams 7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO 6059 184 (Picture sleeve) Released: 30 September 1977 Rockin' All Over The World' was cover version of the song written and previously recorded by ex-Credence Clearwater Revival co-founder John Fogerty. Fogerty had issued his original recording as a single in September 1975 and also included the track on his self titled solo album later in the year. It was this original recording that Rick Parfitt had first heard on his car radio, which prompted him to suggest to the rest of the band members that they should record a 'Quo' version. Although the other band members were initially reluctant the song was eventually recorded and has subsequently become a Quo anthem. This single was a huge chart success reaching number the number three slot and remaining in the chart for some sixteen weeks. The flipside track 'Ring Of Change' was the original recording included on the Quo album 'Blue For You'. This single was also the first Vertigo Quo release to be issued with an accompanying picture sleeve. In My Chair (Rossi/Young) (3.14) Producer: John Schroeder 7 inch vinyl single - PYE 7N 46095 Released 21 July 1978 A further re-issue by Pye Records. The two tracks featured are both the original previously released recordings. Too Far Gone (Lancaster) (3.12) Producer: Pip Williams 7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 1 Released: 25 August 1978 'Again And Again' was the first new Quo single to be issued since 'Rockin' All Over The World' almost a year earlier. This release was issued to coinside with the band's headline appearance at the Reading Festival on Saturday 26th August 1978 and subsequently became another chart hit for the band, reaching number thirteen in September. The track 'Too Far Gone' was the recording previously included on the band's album 'Rockin' All Over The World' in 1977. Ice In The Sun (Wilde/Scott) (2.10) Producer: John Schroeder 7 inch vinyl single - PYE 7N 46103 Released: September 1978 This single was issued by Pye to mark the tenth anniversary since the release of the original 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men' single. Both recordings featured are the original previously released tracks from 1968. This particular re-issue was also later re-pressed on PRT's own label when the company took over the Pye company and back catalogue in 1980. Let Me Fly (Rossi/Frost) (4.20) Producer: Pip Williams 7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 2 (Picture sleeve) Released: 17 November 1978 Both 'Accident Prone' and 'Let Me Fly' had been included on the Quo album 'If You Cant' Stand The Heat', released in October 1978. Although this single did enter the UK singles chart its showing was disappointing, reaching only the number thirty six slot. Down The Dustpipe (C Groszmann) (2.03) Producer: John Schroeder 7 inch YELLOW vinyl single - PYE 'FLASHBACKS' FBS 2 (Picture sleeve) Released: 6 March 1979 This single was released by Pye as part of their 'Flashbacks' series - which included releases by several other former Pye recording artists. All records in the series were pressed on coloured vinyl and came complete with a sleeve depitcting a 'period' photograph of the artist or group featured. Both of the recordings featured were the original tracks previously released in 1968 and 1970 respectively. Gerdundula (Manston/James) (3.19) 7 inch vinyl single - PYE 7P 103 (Picture sleeve) Producer: John Schroeder Released: June 1979 This single was released to co-inside with the 1979 Quo UK tour, to promote the Pye compilation album 'Just For The Record' - also released in June 1979. In addition, and in an effort to promote both the single and album, Pye issued twenty five thousand flexi discs (attached to the front of a special 'Quo' edition of Record Mirror), which were given away to fans attending the concerts throughout the tour. The recording of 'Gerdundula' featured was the version first issued on the original 'In My Chair' single in 1970. Hard Ride (Lancaster/Green) (3.22) Producer: Pip Williams 7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO 6059 242 (Picture sleeve) Released: 14 September 1979 The intro to 'Whatever You Want' has been described by many music critics as one of the best ever featured on a rock record. This was the song chosen as the title track for Quo's forthcoming album (released on 12 October). The first one hundred thousand copies were available with a picture sleeve featuring the now famous 'penguin in suspenders' photograph, a theme which became synonymous with both the band and their album during this period of their career. 'Whatever You Want' became a major chart success, reaching the number four position in the UK. The track 'Hard Ride' was co-written by Alan Lancaster and Mick Green - the former lead guitarst with the famous rock 'n' roller Johnny Kidd (And The Pirates) during the sixties. This track was not included on any Quo album until the compilation entitled 'To Be Or Not to Be', released in 1983. Since its release, the track 'Whatever You Want' has also been used in televison advertisements for 'Bella' magazine in 1991 and 'The Sunday Mirror' newspaper in 1993. Runaway (Rossi/Frost) (4.32) Producer: Pip Williams 7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO 6059 248 (Picture sleeve) Released: 16 November 1979 'Living On An Island' was a song co-written by Rick Parfitt and Bob Young about the twelve months Parfitt had spent living on Jersey in the Channel Islands for tax reasons, during the late seventies. Despite the fact that this track had been previously included on the Quo album 'Whatever You Want' (together with flipside track 'Runaway'), the single became an immediate success eventually spending ten weeks in the UK charts, where it peaked at number sixteen. In keeping with the 'penguin' theme started with the previous 'Whatever You Want' single, the first one hundred thousand copies of 'Living On An Island' were issued with a picture sleeve featuring several penguins enjoying arctic conditions. |
