1980 WHAT YOU'RE PROPOSING (Rossi/Frost) (4.13)
A B Blues (Rossi/Parfitt/Lancaster/Coghlan/Bown) (4.33)

Producers: Status Quo and John Eden
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 3 (Picture sleeve)
Released: 3 October 1980

'What Your Proposing' was the first single to be released from the forthcoming Quo album 'Just Supposin' (also released in October 1980). The track was actually recorded in only two or three takes and when released as a single became a huge chart hit for the band, reaching the number two slot in the UK. The flipside track entitled 'A B Blues' was a non-album instrumental studio jam.
This was the first Quo instrumental to be released since 'Good Thinking' (flipside to 'Tune To The Music') in 1971. Some later pressings of this single mis-credited Andy Bown as Andy BROWN on the lipside composers credit. 'A B Blues' was not issued on any Quo album until 1995 when it was featured on the compilation entitled 'The Other side Of Status Quo'. The initial pressing run of seventy five thousand copies of this single were issued with a colour picture sleeve.

1980 LIES (Rossi/Frost) (3.56)
DON'T DRIVE MY CAR (Parfitt/Bown) (4.12)

Producers: Status Quo and John Eden
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 4 (Picture sleeve)
Released: 28 November 1980

This single was issued as a double 'A' sided single - giving each track equal status, although 'Lies' was considered the most commercially acceptable by majority of radio stations. Both tracks had previously been included on the Quo album 'Just Supposin' and the single went on to become a chart success, reaching number eleven in the UK during December 1980.
Some two hundred and fifty thousand copies of this single were issued with a picture sleeve. The first one hundred thousand printed in colour, whilst the remainder were printed in black and white. Copies of the vinyl record were pressed at various Phonogram factories in the UK and Europe, this 'multi- pressing' was no doubt a contributing factor partly resposible for the song title 'Don't Drive My Car' being mispressed twice - once as 'Don't Drive My CAF' (French pressing) and once as 'Don't Drive MYICAR' (later UK pressing).

1980 SOMETHING 'BOUT YOU BABY (I LIKE) (R Supa) (2.50)
Enough Is Enough (Rossi/Frost/Parfitt) (2.52)

Producers: Status Quo and John Eden
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 5 (Picture sleeve)
Released: 20 February 1981

'Something 'Bout You Baby (I Like)' was written by vocalist/guitarst Richard Supa in the early seventies. Several other artists have previously covered this song, with perhaps the most successful - prior to Quo's release, being recorded by Tom Jones (who reached number thirty six in 1974). However, the recording which prompted Francis Rossi to suggest to the band that they should record their own version was by Glen Campbell and Rita Coolidge.

This Status Quo recording became a chart hit the week following its release and went on to reach number nine in the UK charts. Both tracks on this single release were also included on the Quo album 'Never Too Late', released in March 1981. Copies of the picture sleeve for 'Something 'Bout You Baby (I Like)' were available in three different colour schemes - full multi-colour, blue print and red print. Majority of the one hundred and fifty thousand sleeves printed were the intended 'full colour' print.

1981 MEAN GIRL (Rossi/Young) (3.53)
In My Chair (Rossi/Young) (3.14)

Producer: John Schroeder
7 inch vinyl single - OLD GOLD OG 9142
Released: November 1981

This release on the Old Gold label was the first time a UK specialist label had issued a single featuring tracks recorded by Status Quo. Both of the recordings were the Pye originals, which were licensed from the PRT company. This single was later re-issued by the Old Gold label in July 1982.

1981ROCK 'N' ROLL (Rossi/Frost) (4.04)
Hold You Back (Rossi/Young/Parfitt) (4.22) - Backwater (Parfitt/Lancaster) (4.21)

Producers: A-side - Status Quo and John Eden / B-side (1) Pip Williams B-side (2) Status Quo
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 6 (Picture sleeve)
Released: 20 November 1981

'Rock 'N' Roll' was one of a few songs (also including 'Sorry' - first recorded by Demis Roussos), written by Francis Rossi and Bernie Frost during a stay in Ireland. Being mostly ballads, none of this batch of songs were written specifically for Quo to record. However, 'Rock 'N' Roll' was later recorded by the band for their album 'Just Supposin'. This edited version of the track was a somewhat suprising choice for a single (having overlooked the remaining tracks on their current 'Never Too Late' album), to follow the success of 'Something 'Bout You Baby (I Like)', as it was the forth track to be lifted from the previous 'Supposin' album.
The remaining two tracks featured on the flipside (which played at 33 rpm) were the original recordings of 'Hold You Back' and 'Backwater' which had first appeared on the Vertigo albums 'Rocking All Over The World' (1977) and 'Quo' (1974) respectively. 'Rock 'N' Roll' became a UK chart success - reaching number eight in December 1981.
In addition to the three track single pressing, Vertigo also issued a special two track version (cat. no. QUO JB6), specifically for use in juke box machines.

1982 DEAR JOHN (Gustafson/Macauley) (3.12)
I Want The World To Know (Lancaster/Lamb) (3.21)

Producer: Status Quo
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 7 (Picture sleeve)
Released: 19 March 1982

'Dear John' was the first single to be released from Quo's twentieth anniversary album entitled '1+9+8+2'. It was also the first release to feature the band's new drummer Pete Kircher, who had replaced John Coghan following his departure in the latter months of 1981. The flipside track 'I Want The World To Know' was also included on the '1+9+8+2' album and the single did become a top ten hit in the UK - actually reaching the number ten position in April 1982.

1982 SHE DON'T FOOL ME (Parfitt/Bown) (4.30)
Never Too Late (Rossi/Frost) (3.57)

Producer: A-side - Status Quo / B-side - Status Quo and John Eden
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 8 (Picture sleeve)
Released: 4 June 1982

'She Don't Fool Me' was originally included on the Quo album '1+9+8+2', whilst the flipside recording was the title track from the band's 'Never Too Late' album - released in March 1981. The single was another chart success in the UK although only reaching a disappointing number thirty six position.

1982 CAROLINE (Live At The N.E.C.) (Rossi/Young) (4.58)
Dirty Water (Live At The N.E.C.) (Rossi/Young) (4.00)

Producer: Status Quo
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 10 (Picture sleeve)
7 inch vinyl single also issued as a PICTURE DISC - VERTIGO QUO P10
Released: 22 October 1982

Both recordings included on this single were recorded at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham on 14 May 1982, during Quo's concert for Prince Charles' own 'Princes Trust' charity. The whole concert was also filmed for a mainstream video release - with the first half of the concert being transmitted live by BBC TV. However, it was also the BBC who later refused to broadcast a video of Quo performing 'Caroline' at the N.E.C. on the weekly 'Top Of The Pops' chart show. This action by the BBC seemed to do little to hinder sales figures, with the single peaking at number thirteen in the UK charts. The live recording of 'Caroline' was later included on a live album of tracks from the N.E.C. concert, which was included as record three in the Status Quo triple album box set entitled 'From The Makers Of....', released in November 1982.

Big Man (Lancaster/Green) (3.40)

Producer: Status Quo
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 12
Released: 28 November 1983

'A Mess Of Blues' was written by the famous partnership of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman and was originally recorded by Elvis Presley for RCA Records in 1960. This Quo cover version was included on the band's album 'Back To Back' and became the second single from the album to reach the UK top twenty - peaking at number fifteen. The flipside track 'Big Man' was also included on the 'Back To Back' album. Due to an error in printing several hundred copies of the picture sleeve for this release were printed with the front and rear photographs inter-changed.

1983 MARGUERITA TIME (Rossi/Frost) (3.27)
Resurrection (Bown/Parfitt) (3.46)

Producer: Status Quo
7 inch vinyl single - VERTIGO QUO 14 (Picture sleeve)
7 inch vinyl single also issued as part of a Christmas Double-pack - VERTIGO QUO 1414 (Gatefold picture sleeve) - which also included a free copy of the single 'Caroline' (Rossi/Young) / 'Joanne' (Lancaster)
7 inch vinyl single also issued as a PICTURE DISC - VERTIGO QUOP 14
Released: 2 December 1983

Dispite being an unusual choice of track for a 'Quo' single, 'Marguerita Time' became a huge hit - reaching number three in the UK charts. This single was also something of a cross-over success for Quo, as it was the band's first single to be played regularly on both BBC Radio One and Radio Two. The flipside track 'Resurrection' was the original recording previously included on the Quo album '1+9+8+2'. Copies of the additional single featuring 'Caroline' and 'Joanne' were pressed from the original 1973 issue (Vertigo 6059 085).
