Rhinos Millennium Tourlog!
Part 2: The First Gigs

Tuesday 20th May 2000.

A Whole Tourload of Gaffa I am the biggest dweeb knobhead in this room. I just lost the first page of my log. I am one pissed off Rhino. Who can save me? Well, you can, friends, brothers, sisters, Romans, country men, just pop on down to your friendly neighbourhood record store, and ask that nice young lady behind the counter for a copy of that good old boys a rocking and a rolling latest disc by that dude R*****, and his hot waxin' "R****'* R******".

No advertising or shameless plugs for solo ventures will be tolerated by the trustees of the Status Quo church of true divinity and endless beer.

Where was I? Right, (gulp) feeling better now....
A lot of serious graft was put in, then that was it, Overture and beginners, 5 minutes please. "Open the curtains, and on with the show, I'm shitting myself, but nobody would know" By the way, sing that to a big musical type thing mate, I think you'll find it a tad amusante. Sorry...

Kiel, Nordsee Halle.
Apart from anything else, you can rehearse as much as you like, but it's nothing like actually doing it. If you make a mistake or go AWOL during the show, you don't stop and say "I messed up can we do it again" 'cos the answer would not be favourable, you mark my words. Plus which, The sound at this venue is NOT good. On top of that. there's actually PEOPLE there!!. In the event, it was a bit of an anticlimax.

Again, and again, and again.... Matthew and Paul really did themselves and us proud. A couple of the tempos were a little wrong, but I'd say it was a typical 1st show of a tour, in fact better than some we've done (one last year does spring to mind). We realised the set wasn't quite right, but had to wait for Matt and Paul to learn new songs before we could put them in the set. Anyway, I thought it was Brahma, and at the end of the day that's all you've got to go on. Then overnight to Emden, in the middle of nowhere, but obviously quite near Holland, as the Dutch were about in force. You're mad!!!

By the way, we recently received a lifetime achievement award from Dutch TV, which A) Was cool, and B) Was about the first time I've felt part of things like that anywhere else, you know, like we in the UK have the Brits. If for instance in Mongolia you want to give me a Mong, I'm your man.
I can't keep my mind on this at the minute. Did I ever tell that one of my school reports read: "possesses a mass of irrelevant information, which he chooses to impart to the whole class at random". I did? Oh well...

MC Tonto and DJ Salt...in the house! Emden was a lot better than Kiel, except that Rick had this idea to do a short reprise at the end of RAOTW. Couple of things here:
1) He hadn't told the crew we were going to try this, so when he started playing it, my amp was off.
2) Dave Salt was on the other side of the stage, and had to run over and turn it on, which was nice, NOT.
3) The out front sound was off
4) Matthew came in with a cue only he and Rick knew about, so nobody started at the same time, which I couldn't anyway.
Apart from that it was great. Lots of billy, and a German support called Bonfire, who was dead friendly. This is a very Spandex type tour so far, the 2 bands we've had opening for us, Fair Warning (big in Japan) and Bonfire (just big) are very eighties, lots of tight trousers and clean hair. If that's your thing, then enjoy. Actually you won't, 'cos they're off doing their own tours now.

51 today! In fact, in Lubeck last night, Tonto and Salty were the two blockrocking beats DJs.

We're off to Magdeburg, at the minute, for the last in a run of 4, better than working, tell you more about what else we've been up to or not on the next bit. It's not so much fun doing this when you're straight, which I am at present, so I'll whip myself up into a coma soon (and I'm straight? camp as a row of tents, me.)
Matthew Letley is a Rock God, it will be the best ever Quo, I can't wait for everyone to see him in action. Not only that, he's also on R****'* R******. OK Rhino, give us a break.

Thanks by the way for so many message board greetings to the GOMORR yesterday, on his 51st birthday.
It's mine next May you know, the 9th, put it in your calendars NOW!!
